History of Slabtown
Gallatin Gateway has a rich history, originally inhabited by Indigenous tribes like the Shoshone and Sioux. In 1865, Zachariah Sales established a sawmill by the Gallatin River, leading to the settlement known as Slabtown. It was renamed Salesville in 1883 as it grew around logging, ranching, and farming. In 1927, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad extended a line to the town, renaming it Gallatin Gateway and promoting it as a stop for tourists visiting Yellowstone National Park.
Naming the market after Slabtown honors the area's agricultural history and acknowledges the current farms, ranches, and producers that make Gallatin Gateway special.
